Effective Date: 1 September 2025
This Code of Conduct applies to all members, students, instructors, staff, parents, guardians, and visitors of the Australian School of Self-Defence (ASOSD). Its purpose is to foster a safe, respectful, and positive training environment where every individual can learn and grow. Adherence to this Code is a condition of membership and participation in any ASOSD activities.
1. Core Principles
Our community is built on a foundation of mutual respect, integrity, and a commitment to safety. We expect all members to uphold these core principles at all times:
- Respect: Show respect for instructors, fellow students, and the training facility (dojo). This includes respecting differences in skill level, background, and personal beliefs.
- Safety: Prioritise the safety of yourself and others. Train in a controlled and responsible manner, and be mindful of your training partners.
- Integrity: Act with honesty and sportsmanship. Uphold the values of martial arts both inside and outside the dojo.
2. General Conduct and Dojo Etiquette
To maintain a clean, safe, and respectful training environment, all individuals must adhere to the following rules within our facilities:
- Respect for Property: Treat the dojo and all equipment with care. Keep hands and feet off walls and mirrors. Do not engage in horseplay or misuse equipment.
- Cleanliness: Ensure you wear a clean and appropriate uniform (gi) for every class. Personal hygiene is essential. Keep the training area and changing rooms tidy.
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for your classes. If you are unavoidably late, wait at the edge of the mat until the instructor acknowledges you and grants permission to join.
- No Food or Drink on the Mat: To maintain hygiene and safety, no food, gum, or drinks are permitted on the training mats.
- Substance-Free Training: You must not participate in any training activity while under the influence of alcohol or any prohibited substance. Smoking is not permitted inside the facility.
3. Training Conduct
During all classes and training sessions, the following conduct is expected:
- Respect for Instructors: Address instructors by their appropriate title (e.g., Sensei, Coach, Mr./Ms.). Follow all instructions promptly and respectfully.
- Respect for Fellow Students: Bow to the dojo and to your partners before and after training. Support your fellow students and encourage their progress. Bullying, intimidation, or any form of harassment will not be tolerated.
- Safe Sparring and Drilling: When sparring or drilling, exercise control and care to avoid injury to your training partners. Intentional or reckless contact causing injury is a serious breach of this Code.
- Appropriate Language: Use respectful and appropriate language at all times. Profanity and offensive language are not acceptable.
4. Conduct Outside the Dojo
As a member of ASOSD, you are a representative of our school. We expect you to conduct yourself with integrity and respect in the community and online. Slander, libel, or any form of public disparagement of the school, its instructors, or its members is not acceptable.
5. Breaches of the Code of Conduct
ASOSD is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. We take breaches of this Code of Conduct very seriously. Any member or visitor who displays abusive, disrespectful, racist, sexist, or otherwise inappropriate behaviour will be asked to leave the premises immediately. Depending on the severity of the breach, consequences may include verbal/written warnings, temporary suspension, or immediate termination of membership. Decisions are at the sole discretion of ASOSD management.
